Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main trends in the line graph regarding visitors to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. The student successfully identifies some key data points, such as the initial higher number of first-time visitors in 2000, the sharp decline in 2002, and the convergence of both visitor types in 2008. However, there are several inaccurate data readings and misinterpretations of the chart. For instance, the text states that in 2000 'a very low number of travellers visit in the caryl who returned, whereas fourtime of more people go and stay there', which misreads the values where first-time visitors were 8,000 and returning visitors were 3,000. Furthermore, the overview is rather simplistic and contains slight inaccuracies regarding the overall trends. Consequently, the task is addressed only partially, placing this response at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, including a brief introduction and an overall concluding statement. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward formatting, broken lines, and erratic spacing. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or misused, such as 'At last year in 2008' and 'Overall in the begging high range of difference shows'. Referencing between sentences is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the exact flow of data comparisons. Paragraphing is attempted, but the severe visual disruption and mechanical cohesion limit the text to Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

Vocabulary is heavily limited and contains numerous spelling and word-choice errors that impede communication. Examples include 'prople' for people, 'firts' for first, 'comeback' for returning, 'caryl iseland' for Caryl Island, and 'begging' for beginning. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'travellers' and 'decline', but these are undermined by pervasive spelling mistakes ('fourtime of more', 'their are10 thousand', 'reach back'). The lexical range is minimally adequate for conveying basic concepts, but frequent errors place it firmly at Band 4.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The writing demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences with frequent, severe errors. Examples of ungrammatical constructions include 'The line graph depicts the amount of prople, who visit for the very firts time and who comeback', 'a very low number of travellers visit in the caryl who returned', and 'both time of prople range shows very closely near'. Punctuation is faulty, with random comma splices and spacing issues. Errors occur in almost every sentence, often distorting the intended meaning and placing the response at Band 4.0.
