Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student attempts to address the prompt by summarising the main features of the line graph regarding first time and returning visitors to Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. An overview is provided in the first paragraph, noting the fluctuations in first time visitors and the significant increase in returning visitors. However, the data points selected contain some inaccuracies, such as stating that returning visitors reached nearly 15000 in 2006 when the actual figure was closer to 15200, and reporting 13000 in 2008 instead of around 13400. Furthermore, the phrasing 'visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008' omits some precise detail. While the general trends are captured, the support and data reporting lack precision, placing this response at Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into three paragraphs, including an introductory overview and two body paragraphs. However, the paragraphing and logical progression are hindered by weak cohesive devices and repetitive transitional markers like 'Firstly,' and 'Secondly,'. The sentences within the body paragraphs are strung together awkwardly with conjunctions such as 'after that' and 'and then' rather than being managed smoothly. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the phrasing 'after thatb number of tourists were grew up rapidly'. Cohesion is mechanical and at times inadequate, leading to an overall score of Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a limited and repetitive range of vocabulary suited to the task, such as 'visitors', 'increased', 'dropped down', and 'number'. There are frequent errors in word choice, morphology, and spelling, including 'signifiicantly', 'after thatb', 'naerly', and the phrase 'became more famous point for the visitor'. Less common lexical items are attempted but are generally inaccurate or unnatural. The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic message, but the lexical control remains weak, resulting in a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammatical range is quite limited, relying mostly on simple and coordinate sentences. Attempts at complex structures or passive forms are absent, and passive/active voice confusion is evident, such as 'returning visitorwere increased signifiicantly' and 'visitor were increased'. There are frequent grammatical errors involving subject-verb agreement ('first time visitor ... were', 'number of visitors were'), missing articles ('on Caryl island'), and tense or word form errors ('were grew up'). These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, justifying a Band 5.0.
