Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the main trends in the line graph, noting figures and movements for both first-time and returning visitors. However, there are significant inaccuracies in the overview and descriptions. For instance, the overview incorrectly states that returning visitors showed a 'steady decrease' when they actually experienced a major upward trend overall. Furthermore, the text falls short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 133 words. Because the task length requirement is not met and key trends are mischaracterized in the overview, the response meets the criteria for Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into an introduction, an overview, and separate body sentences for each visitor type, which provides a basic structure. However, paragraphing is underdeveloped, with some ideas clumped together and lacking smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes inaccurate, such as using 'however' and 'but' redundantly within the same sentence (e.g., 'however the number decline to (4000) in 2002, but it made up a dramtic increase'). Referencing is mostly clear, but the overall progression lacks sophistication, placing it at a Band 5.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for basic reporting, including terms like 'increase', 'decrease', and 'highest figure'. However, there are frequent word-choice and collocation issues, such as 'made up a dramatic increase' instead of 'experienced a dramatic increase', and spelling mistakes like 'dramtic' and 'periode'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and less common lexical items are attempted with noticeable inaccuracy. These issues place this criterion at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation flaws, such as missing capitalization at the beginning of sentences ('in 2000 the number...'), missing articles ('returning visitors's number'), and run-on sentences joined poorly by conjunctions ('however... however... but'). Errors occasionally cause strain for the reader, although basic meaning is generally retrievable. This performance aligns with a Band 5.0.
