Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons of visitors to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. The overview accurately captures the general upward trend for both groups and the shift in dominance. Key data points are cited, such as the starting figures and the peak for returning visitors. However, there are a few minor factual confusions regarding the years and numbers in the body paragraphs, such as stating first-time visitors dropped 'to its lowest point about 4000 in 2000' (when 2000 was actually the starting point, and 2002 was the lower point of 4000). Overall, the task is well-addressed with clear support from the visual data, placing it firmly at a Band 6.5 to 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. It is organized into four distinct paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs dedicated to each visitor category. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'While', 'In 2000', 'However', and 'In contrast' are used effectively to connect sentences and paragraphs. Referencing is generally clear, though paragraphing and transitions could be slightly more polished to achieve a higher band. The logical flow is maintained throughout, ensuring the reader can easily follow the comparisons between first-time and returning visitors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'categories', 'surpassing', 'upward trend', and 'fluctuating'. There are several spelling and typographical errors, such as 'illustrate' instead of 'illustrates', 'caryl' instead of 'Caryl', 'fisrt' instead of 'first', 'comapred' instead of 'compared', 'arround' instead of 'around', 'vistors' instead of 'visitors', 'stadily' instead of 'steadily', 'retrunring' instead of 'returning', 'viositors' instead of 'visitors', 'remianed' instead of 'remained', and 'bbroughly' instead of 'roughly'. Despite these flaws, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the trends accurately, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing subordinate clauses such as 'While first visitors were initially higher in number, returning visitors overtook them...' and 'Despite a slight decline over the final two year...'. There are several grammatical and mechanical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The line chart illustrate'), pluralization errors ('over the final two year'), and awkward phrasing ('ending of the period accounted at bbroughly'). However, the complex structures attempted show control, and the errors do not impede overall comprehension, reflecting a solid Band 6 performance.
