Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student attempts to cover all parts of the task by reporting the main trends and making comparisons between first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island. However, there are notable inaccuracies in reading the data, particularly in the initial year where the student states that first-time visitors were 'about 8000' while returning visitors were 'about 2500' (the chart shows first-time at 8,000 and returning at 3,000). The overview mentions that returning visitors 'outweigh in number throughout the period', which is generally accurate, but some of the specific intermediate figures are confused or imprecisely reported. The response is somewhat underdeveloped in terms of synthesizing the overarching trends due to fragmented data points, placing it within the Band 5 to 6 range.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs, showing a basic attempt at logical organization. However, the progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions, mechanical cohesive devices (such as 'Where, the first time visitors...'), and unclear referencing. For example, sentences like 'From 2000 to 2002, the first time tourists was outhweighed in number than returned vistor...' lack smooth flow and correct grammatical linking. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is faulty, which pulls the coherence score down to Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate to convey the basic trends, featuring terms like 'upward trend', 'dramatically', 'staedily', and 'significantly'. However, there are numerous lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'returing', 'outhweighed', 'vistor', 'vistors', 'decilned', and 'noticeablly'. The student attempts less common vocabulary ('outweigh', 'fluctuated' implied), but imprecise word choice and frequent spelling errors restrict the lexical score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical control is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition use, such as 'the first time tourists was outhweighed', 'returning people who travelled to island figure', and 'returning category decilned 15000 to 13000'. Punctuation and sentence construction often impede smooth reading, as seen in fragmented clauses like 'Where, the first time visitors grew significantly'. These persistent errors place the grammar performance firmly at Band 5.0.
