Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line chart below tracks the number of individuals who visited Caryl Island for the first time and also illustrates the volume of visitors who came back after their first trip over the eight-years period from 2000 to 2008.

Overall, both of the figures faced upward trends mostly. The quantity of first time guests diminished in early 2000s, however, it managed to rose up afterwards. The re-vistors' number fluctuated throughout the period, but climbed down by the year 2008.

The volume of returning visitors was far more than the first time guests. In 2000, the figure of re-visitors commenced at about 3,500 people and reached to 10000 in 2002. In the year 2006, the number of guests peaked and rose upto 15000. Subsequently, in 2008, the volume decreased and reached to less than 14000 people.

In contrast, the amount of new guest started at 8000 and in 2002, it droped half the number. After that fall, it continued to soar and the quantity reached to 12000 by the year 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview and reporting the main features and trends of the two visitor types from 2000 to 2008. For instance, the student correctly notes that first-time visitors dropped in the early 2000s before rising to approximately 12,000 in 2008, while returning visitors peaked in 2006 at around 15,000. However, there is a minor contradiction in the text regarding overall volume: the second body paragraph states that 'The volume of returning visitors was far more than the first time guests', which is generally accurate for most years, yet the data points and trends are otherwise well-selected and compared accurately against the visual data. The overview effectively captures the upward trajectories and fluctuations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. It is divided into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs dedicated to contrasting the two data series. Paragraphing is used appropriately. Cohesive devices are employed with reasonable flexibility, such as 'Overall', 'Subsequently', and 'In contrast'. However, there are some minor mechanical issues or awkward references, such as 'both of the figures faced upward trends mostly' and the slightly abrupt transitions between sentences in the body paragraphs. Overall cohesion is clear, and the logical relationship between ideas is maintained without confusing the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items related to data trends, such as 'diminished', 'fluctuated', 'soar', and 'peak'. However, there are several word choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher band. For example, the phrases 'rose up' (instead of 'rose' or 'increased'), 're-vistors' number' (awkward phrasing), and 'droped half the number' (incorrect preposition and collocation) detract from precision. Spelling is generally acceptable, but minor lexical inaccuracies remain noticeable throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing choices, such as 'over the eight-years period' (incorrect plural noun adjunct), 'it managed to rose up' (double-marking past tense), and 'the amount of new guest started' (lack of plural agreement). Punctuation is mostly functional. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from achieving a Band 7.
