Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by summarising the main features of the line graph regarding first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. An overview is provided, stating that returning visitors outnumbered first-time visitors overall. However, there are numerous inaccuracies in reporting specific data points. For example, the writer claims returning visitors reached 14,000 in 2006 and dropped to 13,000, whereas the chart shows figures around 15,200 and 13,400 respectively. Furthermore, the misuse of terms like 'ratio' and 'percentage' when discussing absolute visitor numbers indicates a lack of precision. While the general trends are captured, the frequent data inaccuracies limit the score to Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. However, the logical progression is hindered by poor punctuation, a lack of sentence boundaries, and weak cohesive devices. Many sentences run into one another without capital letters or full stops, such as '...about 3000 then straightly increase in 2002 the ratio stood at 10000 After this slow rise...'. Cohesive devices like 'On the other hand' and 'In a nutshell' are used, but their mechanical repetition and awkward phrasing weaken the overall structure. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion fails due to punctuation errors, leading to a Band 5.0 score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, relying heavily on words like 'amount', 'increase', and 'rise'. There are noticeable inappropriate word choices, such as using 'ratio' and 'percentage' to describe raw visitor numbers, and 'population' to refer to tourists ('population stood at 13000'). Spelling errors are also present, such as 'decrase' and 'caryl island' (lowercase names). Although the language is minimally adequate to convey basic trends, the frequent lexical errors and lack of a wider, more precise vocabulary range place this response at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or poorly constructed compound sentences, and complex structures are largely absent or faulty. There is a total lack of standard punctuation, with run-on sentences dominating the text due to missing full stops and capital letters (e.g., '...in 2002 the ratio of first time visitors were dramatically decrase...'). Subject-verb agreement errors are common, such as 'the ratio of returning visitors are high' and 'the ratio of first time visitors were'. Frequent grammatical and punctuation errors cause significant strain for the reader, fitting the Band 4.0 descriptor.
