Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited caryl island from 2000 to 2008.

Overall the number of returned visitors who visited caryl island in 2000 was lower than the number of visitors who visited this island first time in the same year. The opposite pattern was followed in 2008, as greater number of people were those who vere returning visitors as compared to first time visitors.

In 2000, the number of returning visitors were almost 2500, this number increased gradually and reached at almost 10,000 people in the year 2002. The number of people exceeded by 12000 after two years and almost 14000 people were those people who visited again by the end of 2006. At the end of 2008, almost 13700 people visited this cary island again.

The number of first time visitors were 8000 in the year 2000, and dropped towards 4000 people by the end of 2002. This number started increasing gradually and by the year 2008, almost 12000 people vistied island for the first time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and trends of both first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the shifting relationship between the two categories over the period. Key data points are selected and reported, such as the initial figures in 2000 and the peak figures towards the end of the period. However, there are minor inaccuracies in reading specific figures from the graph; for instance, the text states that returning visitors were 'almost 2500' in 2000 when the graph shows around 3000, and reports numbers for 2006 and 2008 that slightly diverge from the exact gridline values. Nevertheless, the overall trends and comparative features are accurately captured, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into four coherent paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, a body paragraph dedicated to returning visitors, and a final body paragraph focusing on first-time visitors. Information and ideas are logically sequenced, guiding the reader clearly through the data. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as transitional phrases like 'In 2000,' 'after two years,' and 'The opposite pattern was followed.' However, paragraphing could be slightly more integrated, and some referencing is repetitive or mechanical (e.g., beginning multiple sentences with 'The number of...'). Despite these minor flaws, the overall arrangement provides a clear logical progression throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'illustrates,' 'gradually,' 'exceeded,' and 'pattern.' However, there are notable spelling errors and lowercase capitalization issues, such as failing to capitalize proper nouns like 'caryl island' and misspelling 'vistied' instead of visited, as well as using 'returned visitors' instead of 'returning visitors.' Less common lexical items are attempted with some inaccuracy in word choice and collocation. While communication is not impeded, the presence of these recurring lexical and mechanical errors keeps the vocabulary score at a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as subordinate clauses ('as greater number of people were those who vere returning visitors as compared to first time visitors'). There are several grammatical errors and typos, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the number of returning visitors were'), incorrect verb forms ('vere'), and missing articles. Punctuation is generally acceptable, though commas are occasionally omitted after introductory prepositional phrases. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent the grammar score from reaching Band 7.0.
