Student answer (Band 5.5)

This graph illustrates the number of individuals who have visited Caryl Island during the period from 2000 to 2008 as well as the returning visitors in the same period.

In the year 2000, first time visitors hit the number of 8000 which was declined upto 4000 in coming two years. After 2002, the numbers were consistently increased till the year 2008 and touch the higher numbers upto 12000. Comparatively, returning visitors were low in numbers in the first year and a significant hike is seen in 2002 to the 10000 visitors. After 2002 the increase was gradual and consistant and reach the numbers more than 14000 till the year 2006. For the next two years, a slight decline is observable of the number of returning visitors. The number of visitors in both categories were consistently increased with the passage of time but only once the number of first time visitors were fell down in the year 0f 2002.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student covers all parts of the task well by reporting the main trends and categories in the graph (first-time visitors and returning visitors). Key features, such as the initial drop in first-time visitors in 2002 and the sharp rise in returning visitors to around 15,200 in 2006, are identified and supported with figures. However, some minor inaccuracies are present in the data reporting; for instance, stating that first-time visitors reached 'upto 12000' in 2008 when the visual data indicates approximately 11,800, and the year reference 'year 0f 2002' contains a typo. Despite these minor discrepancies, the overall response provides a clear overview and effectively highlights comparisons between the two groups. It meets the expectations for Band 6.5 to 7.0, leaning toward solid coverage of main trends.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a logical overall arrangement, moving from an introductory statement into a detailed chronological description of the graph. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Comparatively', 'After 2002', and 'For the next two years'. However, paragraphing is weak; the entire body of the response is clumped into a single massive paragraph after the introduction rather than being organised into clear, distinct analytical paragraphs. Furthermore, referencing and transitional flow can feel slightly mechanical in places. These cohesion flaws prevent the response from achieving a higher band score, placing it firmly at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'individuals', 'significantly', 'gradual', 'consistant' (spelling error), and 'decline'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with some success, but there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'upto' (written as one word), 'consistant' instead of 'consistent', and awkward phrasing like 'hit the number of' and 'touch the higher numbers'. Word choice is generally sufficient to convey meaning without impeding the reader, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for Band 7.0. Therefore, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and time markers. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, such as passive voice misuse ('was declined upto'), tense inconsistencies ('the numbers were consistently increased'), and preposition errors ('in the year 0f 2002'). While these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from reaching Band 6.5. The control over grammar aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptor.
