The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Looking at the graph, we can easily surmise that the first time visitors decreased from 8000 to 4000 visits in year 2000 to 2002 but after which it kept increasing gradually. It went from its lowest 4000 in year 2002 to an outstanding 12000 visits by year 2008. While at the same time we can see the returining visitors data and its interesting to see that it kept on incresing unitll 2006. After which it only saw a small decline of a thosand visitors. Looking at this graph it is evident that this place, Caryl, is worth visiting and why its so popular with tourists. The returning visitors data makes it clear that people find this place worth visiting while the gradual increase in new visitors tells us that people talk about it and its spreading as a great place to visit. Looking at the numbers, we can see the hgihest number of visitors was in the year 2008 which recording a whopping 25000 visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the main features of the line graph, noting trends for both first-time and returning visitors. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting and interpretation. The student incorrectly states that first-time visitors reached 12000 in 2008 (the actual figure is approximately 11800, which is acceptable), but more severely, at the end of the text, they claim a combined or total figure of '25000 visitors' in 2008 by adding data incorrectly, and includes subjective commentary ('this place, Caryl, is worth visiting') which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. Furthermore, there is no paragraphing, which hinders the overall presentation of information. Consequently, the task is addressed only partially, warranting a band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The entire response is written as a single, dense block of text with no paragraph breaks whatsoever. This makes the progression of ideas difficult to follow. While basic cohesive devices are used ('While at the same time', 'After which'), referencing is sometimes repetitive and mechanical ('Looking at the graph', 'Looking at this graph', 'Looking at the numbers'). There is no clear overall organisational structure separating the introduction, overview, and body details. Due to the lack of paragraphing and basic cohesion management, the response aligns with a band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic summary, featuring some attempts at less common words like 'surmise', 'outstanding', and 'whopping'. However, there are multiple spelling errors ('returining', 'incresing', 'unitll', 'thosand', 'hgihest') and awkward word choices. The use of informal, conversational expressions like 'whopping 25000 visitors' is not suitable for an Academic Task 1 report. The lexical range is limited, and spelling errors cause some distraction for the reader, placing this performance at a band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as subordinate clauses ('While at the same time we can see...'). However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are run-on sentences and punctuation omissions. Errors such as 'it kept increasing gradually. It went from its lowest 4000 in year 2002 to an outstanding 12000...' demonstrate frequent mistakes in basic grammar and agreement. While meaning is generally recoverable, the frequency of grammatical slips and punctuation lapses keeps the score at a band 5.0.
