Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to report the main trends in the line graph concerning first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, the text states that first-time visitors rebounded to 10,000 in 2008 (whereas the graph shows approximately 11,800) and describes returning visitors reaching 15,000 in 2006 rather than the approximate 15,200, alongside other confusing numerical inconsistencies. Furthermore, the overview is rather fragmented and weak. While the general trajectories are mentioned, the lack of precision in reading the data and the confused sentence structures impede a fully satisfactory completion of the task. This performance aligns with Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response attempts paragraphing, but the divisions are unnatural and disrupt the flow of information. For example, the overview is squeezed into a single, poorly linked sentence immediately followed by abrupt body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or incorrectly, such as 'where as' instead of 'whereas', and 'In which they downfall'. Referencing between sentences is frequently unclear, leading to a disjointed progression of ideas. Although a basic logical sequence is intended, the mechanical and inaccurate use of cohesive ties and poor paragraph structure keep this criterion at Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and contains numerous errors in word formation, spelling, and collocation. Examples include 'siginficantly rose', 'temporoy', 'rebound sharply', and 'returing visitors'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'fluctuated', 'surge', and 'marginally', but these are often used with incorrect grammatical forms or awkward collocation (e.g., 'surged for the time begin till 2004 it hited around 12000'). These noticeable lexical errors and misspellings cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple or poorly constructed complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies, missing prepositions, and faulty clause structures (e.g., 'the proportion of returning visitors are siginficantly rose', 'the first time visitors were around 8000.This decline proved temporoy', and 'it was remained climbed up'). Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences and missing capitalization. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5 descriptor.
