Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph provide the information about the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited carly island in betwenn 2000 and 2008.

Overall, it is clear that first time visitors in carly is at the highest level which then fall rapidly and then increase gradually. However the dramatic increase will be seen in people returning from carly over the period of time.

In 2000,there is a large group of people who first time visits the carly which is about 8000 which lowers rapidly and reaching 4000 in 2002.However after this decline there is a graduall increase in visitors population in carly with the passage of time.

In contrast people returning from the carly will be at the lowest point of about 3000 in 2000,while this percentage of people changed dramatically from 3000 to 14000 over the period of time, although there would be some flutuations during the rise of the graph.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the line graph, correctly identifying the trends for both first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. However, there are significant inaccuracies in reporting the data in the overview and body paragraphs. For instance, the student states that first-time visitors were 'at the highest level which then fall rapidly,' whereas the graph actually shows returning visitors ending up higher, and first-time visitors started at 8,000 before dropping to 4,000, not starting at the absolute highest point overall. Furthermore, referring to returning visitors as 'people returning from the carly' is slightly imprecise in meaning. The overall trend is somewhat confused in the second paragraph. These data inaccuracies and minor misinterpretations pull the score down to Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is divided into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the respective visitor types. This provides a clear structural framework appropriate for Task 1. However, cohesion is often faulty or mechanical. The student overuses connectors like 'However' and 'which' to string clauses together awkwardly, such as 'which is about 8000 which lowers rapidly.' Referencing is sometimes unclear, and logical progression suffers due to contradictory statements about trends. Paragraphing is attempted adequately, but the overall cohesive control remains at a Band 5 level due to repetitive mechanical linking devices and imprecise referencing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, attempting words such as 'gradually', 'dramatically', and 'fluctuations'. However, there are numerous errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation. For example, 'carly island' is consistently misspelled with a lowercase letter and incorrect spelling, 'in betwenn' contains a spelling error, and phrases like 'visitors population' and 'people returning from the carly' are unnatural. The range of vocabulary is limited, and spelling/word-choice mistakes cause some distraction for the reader, placing this response firmly in the Band 5 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences using relative clauses, these are frequently faulty or unpunctuated. For example, 'In 2000,there is a large group of people who first time visits the carly which is about 8000 which lowers rapidly and reaching 4000 in 2002' runs multiple clauses together with tense inconsistencies ('is', 'visits', 'lowers', 'reaching'). Punctuation is weak, with missing spaces after commas and periods. Frequent errors in tense consistency, articles, and verb forms cause difficulty for the reader, resulting in a Band 5 score.
