Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and trends for both first-time and returning visitors on Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. An overview is provided, noting the general upward trends, and key data points such as the peaks in 2006 and 2008 are cited accurately from the graph. While the overview could be slightly more fully integrated, the response successfully fulfills the requirements of Task 1 by making relevant comparisons and presenting accurate data throughout the body paragraphs. This performance aligns well with Band 6.5 or a solid Band 6 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organized into clear paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by an overview, and separate body paragraphs for first-time and returning visitors. Cohesive devices such as 'however', 'after 2002', and 'again' are used to signal logical relationships, though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical ('After it reaches to its peak point...'). Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall progression of information is coherent, ensuring the reader can follow the trends easily. These features fit the Band 6 descriptor well.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'exponential growth', 'peak point', and 'decline'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('illsturates' instead of illustrates, 'exponteial' instead of exponential, 'submit' instead of summit) and some awkward word choices ('population of returning visitors' instead of number of visitors). While these lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips do not impede overall communication, they prevent the score from reaching Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing introductory adverbials and subordinate clauses. There are, however, frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'there is 8000 first time visitors' (singular verb with plural noun) and 'there seems to decrease' instead of 'there seems to be a decrease'. Punctuation errors also occur, such as unnecessary spaces before commas. Despite these recurring errors, they rarely impede communication, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6 criteria.
