Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the line graph, including general trends for both first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. The student successfully identifies starting and ending figures, such as the initial 8,000 first-time visitors in 2000 and the rise to around 12,000 by 2008. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in data reporting, particularly regarding the year 2001 (for which there is no data point on the graph) and the specific figures for 2002–2004, where the text states returning visitors were 12,000 to 14,000 when the chart shows 10,000 to 12,000. Additionally, the overview is weak, consisting merely of a basic concluding sentence rather than a cohesive summary of the main trends. Therefore, the response fulfills the basic requirements but lacks precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text suffers from a major structural flaw: it is written as a single, unparagraphed block of text. This severely impacts the overall logical organisation and makes the progression harder to follow. While basic cohesive devices and transition signals are used—such as 'on the other hand' and 'while'—referencing is occasionally confusing, as seen in phrases like 'while these were more than 12000 people'. Paragraphing is absent entirely, which is a key requirement for achieving a higher band in Academic Task 1. Consequently, the arrangement feels mechanical and lacks clear spatial or chronological segmentation.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited and repetitive. The student frequently reuses basic vocabulary such as 'people', 'visitors', and 'returners' instead of employing synonyms like 'holidaymakers', 'tourists', or 'travelers'. There are awkward word choices and unnatural collocations throughout the text, including phrases like 'visited first time the island', 'returned back' (which is redundant), and 'grown from 6000 visitors'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the lack of precise lexical control and variety restricts the score to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple and coordinate sentences. Attempts at complex structures often result in grammatical errors, awkward phrasing, or run-on sentences, such as 'People use to visit Caryl Island and are visiting from years.' There are persistent errors in verb tense usage, prepositions, and articles, including 'visited first time' instead of 'visited for the first time' and 'Frome the year'. Punctuation is also weak, with spacing errors after commas and periods. These frequent grammatical errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
