Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student covers all key features of the line graph and makes relevant comparisons between first-time and returning visitors throughout the period. An overview is provided, noting the main trends such as the fluctuations in first-time visitors and the general rise of returning visitors until 2006. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting; for example, the summary states that first-time visitors 'peaked at 12000 visitors in between 2004-2008', whereas the graph shows them reaching around 11800 in 2008 following a continuous rise from 2004, and there are some contradictions between the body paragraphs and the conclusion regarding the overall trajectory of first-time visitors. Despite these minor data reading flaws, the main trends are adequately captured, earning a solid Band 6.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, separate body paragraphs for each category of visitor, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions, such as 'Overall', 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'To sum up'. However, some cohesive links and referencing feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as 'Furthermore' and 'Additionally'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas, but the logical progression within sentences is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing. Overall, the essay is coherent and easy to follow, fitting the descriptors for Band 6.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, using appropriate terms related to data trends such as 'decreased rapidly', 'increased significantly', 'peaked', and 'declined'. However, there are noticeable lexical and collocation errors, including 'population of new visitors' instead of 'number of new visitors', and agreement slips like 'tourist' instead of 'tourists'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success, and word choices are occasionally imprecise. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response comfortably in the Band 6 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and conjunctions such as 'whereas' and 'before experiencing'. Grammatical control is mixed; there are several errors in subject-verb agreement and punctuation, such as 'numbers were 12000 and 15000 respectively' lacking a subject, and comma splices or unnecessary commas like 'First of all, In 2000'. Complex structures are attempted with varying accuracy, but the errors rarely impede the reader's understanding, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6.
