Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and trends of both visitor categories from 2000 to 2008. A clear overall trend is provided in the second paragraph, noting that returning visitors were generally higher than first-time visitors for the period. Key data points are accurately cited, such as first-time visitors starting at 8,000, dropping to 4,000 in 2002, and reaching about 12,000 at the end, while returning visitors peaked around 15,000 in 2006. However, there are minor misinterpretations of data details, such as stating that returning visitors started at around 3,000 in 2000 (which is accurate) but phrasing some comparisons slightly awkwardly. Overall, the information is well selected and supported by the visual data, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6, rounded to 6.5 for good feature coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is divided into four paragraphs, following a logical structure with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the specific data series. Cohesive devices are used throughout, such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', and 'Addition'. However, some cohesive links are mechanically used or grammatically awkward, for instance, 'Addition' instead of 'In addition', and 'Inspite of, starting from around 3,000 in 2000 were the ones who return to the Island' which creates a disjointed sentence structure. Paragraphing is logical, separating the overview from the detailed body paragraphs. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional clumsy transitions prevent the text from achieving a higher band. Cohesion is adequate for a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common items such as 'uptrend', 'dramactic' (dramatic), and 'surpased' (surpassed). However, there are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'wnet' instead of 'went', 'revisting' instead of 'revisiting', 'begining' instead of 'beginning', 'vistors' instead of 'visitors', and 'returnning' instead of 'returning'. These errors do not impede communication as the meaning remains clear, but they restrict the lexical score. Phrasing like 'became top' is also overly informal for an Academic Task 1 response. The vocabulary used is sufficient for a Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Despite the decline at the begining the number of vistors who were first-time eventually rose later however it did not overtake the returnning vistors for 8 years.' There are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues, including run-on sentences lacking commas, missing auxiliary verbs ('the number of revisting tourists were higher', 'the number of returning vistors were at uptrend'), and incorrect prepositional usage ('for 8 years', 'at last for 13,000'). Furthermore, sentence fragments like 'Inspite of, starting from around 3,000 in 2000 were the ones who return to the Island' demonstrate weak syntactic control over complex structures. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar performance firmly at Band 5.5.
