Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided line graph illustrates the number of individuals touring the Caryl Island first time and returning visitors between 2000 and 2008.

Overall, it is evident that individuals coming back to visit Caryl Island experienced a steady growth overtaking first time visitors before reaching its peak and plummeted towards the end of the given timeframe, Whilst after a sharp decline the number of first time visitors experienced a moderately stable increase and finished very close to returning tourists at the end of the provided timeframe.

In 2000, the number of individuals coming back to visit Caryl Island was around 3000 before reaching 6000 in 2001 and eventually overtaking the figure for first time visitors. The numbers of returning people soared up to 6000 in 2002, climbing up to 12000 in 2004 before reaching its peak at approximately 15000 people in 2006. After reaching its peak, the figure dropped and finished under 14000 in 2008.

On the other hand, the people visiting Caryl Island in 2000 were higher about 8000 than recurring visitors, the figure then dropped further eventually undertaken by recurring visitors and reaching its lowest point in 2002 when only 4000 people were visited the Island. The figure then experienced a steady and continuous rise, reaching 6000 people in 2004 and further climbed up to 10000 in 2006 and finally finished just shy of returning visitors at around 12000 people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons between first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the main trajectory of both data series. Key data points, such as the initial figures in 2000, the crossover point, peaks, and final values in 2008, are appropriately selected and reported. However, there are a few minor numerical inaccuracies in the detailed body paragraphs, such as stating that returning visitors reached 6000 in 2001 (which is not on the grid) and mentioning that returning visitors reached 'approximately 15000 people in 2006' when the visual data indicates around 15200 (though within tolerance) and minor confusion in referencing specific data points. Despite these minor data discrepancies, the response provides a well-developed overview and clear comparisons throughout, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0; here, the comprehensive selection of trends supports a solid Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is organized into a logical four-paragraph structure, including a clear introduction, an overall summary paragraph, and two distinct body paragraphs detailing each category. Progression is generally clear throughout the text. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Whilst', 'In 2000', and 'On the other hand'. However, some referencing is slightly clunky or repetitive, and sentence boundaries occasionally feel forced, as seen in the extremely long run-on sentence used for the overall paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed body paragraphs, ensuring the overall arrangement remains coherent despite minor mechanical issues in cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Words and phrases such as 'steady growth', 'plummeted', 'sharp decline', 'soared up', and 'continuous rise' are used effectively to describe trends. There are, however, some lexical and collocation errors, such as 'undertaken' instead of 'overtaken', and awkward phrasing like 'people visiting... were higher about 8000 than recurring visitors' and '4000 people were visited the Island'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success, but spelling is generally accurate and communication is not impeded by lexical limitations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses, participial phrases, and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Whilst after a sharp decline the number of first time visitors experienced...'). However, grammatical errors occur with some frequency, particularly regarding passive voice construction ('were visited the Island'), word order, and confusing pronoun or subject-verb agreement ('the people visiting... were higher about 8000 than recurring visitors'). Punctuation is also occasionally lacking, leading to lengthy, breathless sentences like the entire second paragraph. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the grammar score to a Band 6.
