Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph shows us the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
To begin with the first time visitors, in the year 2000 around 8000 people visit the island and then there is a downfall shown in the graph in the 2002 and in 2004 there is a slight rise in number which is around 6 thousand and keep getting rise and reached maximum in the year 2008 which is around 12000.
In the second line graph the returning visitors are low in the early 2000 around 3000 and reach 10000 in the year 2002 and keep on the rising until 2006 but there is a downfall in the year 2008 where number has reduce to 13000

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response covers the main trends in the line graph, identifying figures for both first time visitors and returning visitors across the period from 2000 to 2008. However, the student has failed to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, reaching only 127 words. Consequently, the data selection and overall overview remain slightly underdeveloped because several years and comparative points are missed or only touched upon briefly. For example, the student notes figures for 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008, but omits a clear, synthesized overview statement that highlights the main overall difference between the two visitor categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has an overall arrangement that makes some sense, beginning with an introduction and then addressing each visitor type in separate paragraphs. However, the cohesion and logical progression are hindered by weak transitions and mechanical referencing, such as 'To begin with the first time visitors' and 'In the second line graph'. Furthermore, the paragraphing is underdeveloped due to the short overall length, and the lack of advanced cohesive devices results in a somewhat repetitive flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but it is repetitive and lacks precision. The student frequently relies on simple verbs and phrases such as 'visit', 'rise', 'downfall', and 'reach'. There are also awkward word choices and forms, such as 'keep getting rise' and 'number has reduce'. Less common lexical items are attempted with noticeable inaccuracy, which occasionally affects the natural flow of the description.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or compound sentences linked with basic conjunctions. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty, as seen in run-on sentences like 'in the year 2000 around 8000 people visit the island and then there is a downfall shown in the graph in the 2002 and in 2004 there is a slight rise...'. There are several grammatical errors regarding tense consistency, preposition usage, and verb forms, which cause some difficulty for the reader.
