Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph illustrates information about the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Overall, it is immediately apperant that the figures for the given catagories followed different trends over the period. While, some catagories showed upward trend, others experienced a decline throughout given time. Furthermore, first time visitors of Caryl Island recorded the highest in 2004, whereas, the first time visistors measured the highest figure in 2008.
At the beginning of period, in 2000 the first time visitors stood at 2000, making the lowest figure among all the catagories. It then increased gradually to 10000, in 2002, and in 2006, this catagory recorded the highest figure which was over 14000 before droping to below 14000, in 2008.
Likewise, the returning visitors started at 8000, in 2000,and experienced a visible drop from 8000, to 4000, in 2002, and then steadly rising to 6000, in 2004, before finishing at 12000, in 2000, which is highest figure of returning visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to provide an overview and summarize the main features of the line graph regarding first time and returning visitors to Caryl Island. However, there are significant factual inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, the student states that first time visitors reached their highest in 2004 and 2008, and confuses the data series entirely in the body paragraphs (e.g., assigning figures of returning visitors to first-time visitors and vice versa). Furthermore, the overview contains contradictory statements ('While, some catagories showed upward trend, others experienced a decline' when both series ultimately rose over the period). Due to these major data misinterpretations and confusion between the two visitor categories, the response falls into the Band 5 range.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by an overall statement, and then body paragraphs attempting to detail the data. However, coherence is heavily impacted by poor logical sequencing and severe confusion regarding which data corresponds to which category. Cohesive devices such as 'At the beginning of period', 'It then increased', and 'Likewise' are used, but referencing is frequently unclear due to the mix-up of data series. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs breaks down as the student misreads the graph values, leading to an overall impression of mechanical and faulty cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting words and phrases such as 'illustrates information', 'gradually', 'experienced a visible drop', and 'steadly rising'. However, there are multiple spelling errors throughout the text, including 'apperant', 'catagories', 'visistors', 'droping', and 'steadly'. Word choice is also occasionally inaccurate, not just due to the data confusion, but in phrases like 'finishing at 12000, in 2000' (which is chronologically impossible given the timeline). These lexical errors and spelling mistakes place the response comfortably at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as concessive clauses ('While, some catagories showed upward trend...') and relative clauses. However, punctuation and grammatical accuracy are weak. There are unnecessary commas separating subjects from verbs and verbs from objects (e.g., 'In 2000 the first time visitors stood at 2000, making...', 'returning visitors started at 8000, in 2000, and experienced...'). Tense control is occasionally unstable, and frequent errors in punctuation and simple syntax cause some distraction for the reader, aligning with the Band 5 descriptor.
