Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student attempts to cover the main trends from the line graph regarding first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. An overview is attempted at the beginning, noting that returning visitors reached a maximum in 2008 and first-time visitors were lowest in 2000. However, the report contains several inaccuracies regarding the data. For instance, the student states that repeat customers were nearly similar in 2004 at 12000 and 11000, and mentions that repeat visitors reached a high point in 2006 (whereas the graph shows 15200 in 2006 and 13400 in 2008, meaning the peak was actually in 2006 for returning visitors, but the text is confused). Furthermore, some data points are misread or awkwardly reported. While all parts of the prompt are addressed, the lack of precision in reporting figures keeps this at Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is divided into paragraphs, starting with an introduction and an overall summary, followed by body details. However, the logical progression is weak and the overall arrangement becomes confusing towards the end. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'In an overall prespective', 'To begin with', and 'Moving forwards', which feel mechanical rather than natural. Paragraphing is attempted, but the sentences within the body paragraphs lack clear cohesive links, making the relationships between ideas difficult to follow at times. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as abrupt shifts in time periods without smooth transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic summary, featuring terms like 'visitors', 'tourists', 'stable', and 'increased'. However, there are numerous spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'prespective' instead of 'perspective', 'clearl' instead of 'clearly', 'visitore' instead of 'visitors', 'fisrt' instead of 'first', 'vistiors' instead of 'visitors', and 'remainded' instead of 'remained'. The student attempts less common phrases like 'dramatically largest number', but these often demonstrate incorrect collocations or awkward phrasing. These errors occasionally cause strain for the reader, fitting the Band 5 descriptor well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The line graph illustrates the information about...' and '...returning visitors made up dramatically largest number of visitors in 2008, which was more than fisrt time visitors'. However, grammatical accuracy is noticeably weak. There are issues with tense usage and verb forms, such as 'were reached a high of point', 'were rose slightly', and 'frequent customers were declined'. Punctuation and spacing errors are also present, including missing spaces after commas and periods. The frequency of grammatical errors means that only some sentences are error-free.
