Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to cover the main trends in the line graph, noting information about both first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. However, there are significant inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the overview incorrectly states that returning visitors had a 'dramatically down fall curve', when the graph actually shows returning visitors increasing sharply from 2000 (3,000) to 2006 (15,200). Additionally, some of the specific figures cited are imprecise or misread against the data points. While the overall task of summarizing the graph is attempted, the flaws in data interpretation limit the level of achievement, corresponding to a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is organized into four paragraphs, which provides a basic structural framework. However, the logical progression is hindered by poor referencing and confusing transitional links. Phrases like 'There is an evident proven that' and awkward introductory clauses disrupt the flow of reading. Cohesive devices are often inaccurate or mechanically used, such as 'trend simultaneously, returning visitors trend had seen'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within sentences and paragraphs frequently breaks down, leading to a confusing reading experience that reflects Band 5.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is quite limited and repetitive, with frequent word-choice errors and awkward collocations. Examples include 'down fall curve', 'highest visitors returns', and 'vistors' (spelling error). The student attempts some less common terms like 'simultaneously' and 'significant decline', but overall control of lexical items is weak. Word formation and spelling mistakes appear throughout the text, which places the response firmly at Band 5.0 for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The grammatical structure of the essay is heavily flawed, containing numerous run-on sentences, missing punctuation, and severe syntactical errors. For example, 'Overall,it is noticed that the first time visitors trend had been increased over the years trend simultaneously, returning visitors trend had seen dramatically down fall curve through the year' is a massive comma splice containing tense errors ('had been increased'). Simple sentences are prone to structural breakdowns, and attempts at complex structures are consistently faulty. Frequent errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader, matching Band 4.0 descriptors.
