Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by reporting the data for both first-time and returning visitors on Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. An overview is attempted in the second paragraph, though it is somewhat simplistic and contains vague phrasing like "in huge quantity." While several figures are accurately cited, there are notable inaccuracies when compared to the visual data. For instance, the student states that returning visitors in 2000 was "more than 2000" (when the actual figure is around 3000) and that in 2008 it "decreased by 14000" (when it actually dropped to 13400 from a peak of 15200). Furthermore, the final paragraph is redundant and unnecessary. Because the key features are not fully or accurately developed, the response meets the criteria for Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organized into multiple paragraphs, including an introduction, overview, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by repetitive and mechanical transitional phrases such as "Firstly," "Secondly," and "Mainly." Cohesive devices are used rather clumsily, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous pronoun use in "after in last years it's increased." Paragraphing is attempted, but the inclusion of a redundant concluding sentence weakens the overall structure. The relationships between ideas are sometimes strained due to awkward sequencing, placing this text firmly in the Band 5.0 category.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, heavily relying on simple terms like "number," "visitors," "increased," and "decreased." There are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as "in huge quantity" instead of "significantly" and "tourist population" instead of "number of tourists." Spelling is generally acceptable, but word choices lack variety and precision. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic subject matter, it fails to demonstrate the flexibility or range required for higher band scores, reflecting the descriptors for Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple and repetitive subject-verb-number constructions. Attempts at complex sentences or time clauses often result in faulty grammar and awkward punctuation, such as in the phrase "Overall, in first two years the number of first time visitors was decreased but, after in last years it's increased in huge quantity." Frequent errors in verb tense, voice (e.g., mixing active and passive elements incorrectly), and prepositional usage are apparent throughout the text. These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar performance at a Band 5.0 level.
