Student answer (Band 5.0)

In Caryl island, there were eight thousand first time visitors in the year 2000 but the graph declined significantly to four thousand in 2002 because of the poor management of waste meterials and poor crime control in the island but in 2002, the government there gave their best to improve which after that gave the best result as the graph kept going upward and reached ten thousand in the year 2006 and reached at the peak in year 2008.

whereas, the response from the returning visitors was much better as the beautiful scenes of valleys, mountains and sea views fascinated them to come again. other than that, there were a whole living society in this island, people kept living there as their own villages or colonies as there were the positive environment all around. there were twenty five hundred returning visitors in the year 2000 but in the year 2008 returning visitors reached to approximately thirteen thousand. whereas, the graph declined from fifteen thousand to thirteen thousand from the year 2006.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the line graph, but it suffers from a major misunderstanding of the Task 1 academic requirements by including personal opinions, external explanations, and unsubstantiated stories such as 'because of the poor management of waste meterials and poor crime control' and descriptions of 'valleys, mountains and sea views'. These elements are entirely absent from the prompt and data. While the response does mention some figures such as 'eight thousand first time visitors in the year 2000' and 'thirteen thousand' in 2008, the inclusion of irrelevant narrative severely undermines the objective reporting required. Furthermore, there is no clear overall trend or overview provided. This performance aligns with Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into two overly dense paragraphs, each consisting of run-on sentences that lack appropriate punctuation and breaks. The progression of ideas is hindered by the lack of structural demarcation, and the response reads as a continuous stream of consciousness rather than a well-organised report. Cohesive devices are minimal or misused, with repetitive transitions such as 'whereas' and 'other than that' creating a disjointed flow. Referencing is also occasionally unclear. This organisational structure corresponds to Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on the presence of some logical grouping between first-time and returning visitors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, relying on everyday terms like 'best result', 'going upward', and 'much better'. There are noticeable spelling and word-form errors, such as 'meterials' instead of 'materials', and awkward phrasing like 'a whole living society'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic concepts related to the data, it lacks the precision and range expected for a higher band score. The lexical limitations, combined with spelling slips, place this response firmly in Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The grammatical structure is characterised by long, highly convoluted sentences joined improperly by coordinating conjunctions and transitional words without adequate punctuation (e.g., '...in the island but in the year 2002, the government there gave their best to improve which after that gave the best result as the graph kept going upward...'). There is a heavy reliance on repetitive clause structures with frequent grammatical errors in tense consistency, relative pronouns, and punctuation. Complex structures are attempted but are generally faulty and impede readability. This demonstrates Band 4.0 performance characteristics.
