Student answer (Band 4.0)

The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. The line graph shown the number of first time visitors and returning visitors whome visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.

Firstly,I am talking about the red graph line. So, the red line is starting 3000, then, this line going to and stop 10000, after that, this line going and stop 12000, and the second last stop is doing 15000 and the last stop is doing 11000. So, this is the red line graph.

Secondly, I am talking about the blue line graph. So, the blue line is starting 8000, then, this line is doing stop 4000, after that, the line is doing to stop 6000 and the second last stop is doing stop 10000 and the last stop is doing 12000. So, this is the blue line graph.

In the other hand, I told previous in two paragraphs the red line and blue line. So, the red line is larger than the blue line. So, this is the Caryl Island.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The candidate manages to cover the two main series on the graph, namely the first-time visitors and returning visitors to Caryl Island, but the overall execution is extremely weak. Instead of reporting trends and making meaningful comparisons, the student relies on repetitive, mechanical descriptions of lines going to specific points (e.g., 'the red line is starting 3000, then, this line going to and stop 10000'). Furthermore, the prompt instructions are copied verbatim into the body of the essay, which does not count toward proper task completion. There is no clear, well-developed overview, and key data points are misread or awkwardly articulated. This falls short of the requirements for higher bands due to the lack of analytical depth and poor selection of main features.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, which is a positive structural attempt, but the progression and logical organisation are severely compromised. The student uses overly conversational and repetitive conversational markers, such as 'Firstly, I am talking about...' and 'Secondly, I am talking about...'. Moreover, the use of cohesive devices is extremely mechanical and unnatural, such as 'In the other hand, I told previous in two paragraphs...'. Referencing is unclear, with frequent reliance on ambiguous pronouns and color descriptions ('red graph line', 'blue line graph') rather than professional data reporting conventions. Overall, the information and ideas are not arranged in a coherently flowing academic manner, justifying a low band score.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

The lexical resource is very basic and repetitive. The student relies entirely on elementary vocabulary items such as 'line', 'graph', 'starting', 'stop', and color designations ('red line', 'blue line') rather than using appropriate terminology for a graphical description, such as 'trend', 'fluctuate', 'peak', or 'decline'. There are also lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'whome visited' and 'the second last stop is doing stop 10000'. The vocabulary used is inadequate for an Academic Task 1 response, failing to demonstrate the flexibility or precision required even at Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting almost entirely of simple, repetitive sentence structures (e.g., 'So, the red line is starting 3000, then, this line going to...'). There are frequent, intrusive grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing prepositions (e.g., 'starting 3000'), tense errors (e.g., 'graph shown'), incorrect relative pronouns ('whome visited'), and malformed verb phrases (e.g., 'is doing stop'). These errors frequently impede communication and demonstrate a lack of control over basic sentence construction, resulting in a low score for grammatical accuracy.
