Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully identifies the main trends and overviews the data provided in the line graph, noting the general trajectories of both first-time and returning visitors. An overview is present, stating the peak for returning visitors and the general increase for first-time visitors. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in reading the data points. For instance, the student states that returning visitors reached a peak of 15000 in 2006, which is reasonably accurate according to the chart, but the description of the initial stage contains some confusion regarding the comparative levels in the early years. The student writes that 'in early stages, amount of returning visitors was very lower than the first time visitors', which is correct for 2000 (3000 versus 8000), but then describes the 2002 figures with some awkward phrasing. Overall, the task is adequately addressed, placing the response firmly in the band 6 category.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is arranged into three paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and a detailed body paragraph. Progression is generally logical, moving from a general summary of the trends to specific data points across the years. However, cohesive devices are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in the fragmented sentence structure 'and first time visitors increased gradally...' starting a new sentence with a conjunction. Referencing and linking could be smoother. Furthermore, paragraphing is unconventional as the overview is placed in a very brief second paragraph separated from the main body, though an overall arrangement is still discernible.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'peak', 'gradually', and 'boom'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'touriest' instead of tourists, 'gradally' instead of gradually, and 'teh' instead of the. Additionally, awkward collocations like 'amount of returning visitors was very lower than' (instead of much lower than) and 'that amount have been increased slowly to reached' indicate limited control over word formation and grammatical context, capping the lexical score at a solid 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'While returning visitors have rise from...' and relative clauses implied in 'visitors who visited Caryl Island'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and forms (e.g., 'returning visitors have reached to the peak', 'which decreases in 2008', 'that amount have been increased slowly to reached', 'A boom in visitors have shown'). These errors in agreement, passive voice construction, and infinitive usage cause some distraction for the reader, though they rarely completely impede overall communication.
