Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the line graph regarding first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island, presenting an overview and some key data points such as the peak in 2006. However, the task is only partially addressed because some interpretations of the data are confused or inaccurate. For instance, the writer states that visitors decreased initially but started increasing overall, which is somewhat too general, and misinterprets the data figures in several places, such as claiming that returned visitors decreased by the end of the period when they actually fluctuated or that 12,000 was 'almost doubled of visitors' in an unclear comparison. Key trends are presented with limited expansion, placing the response at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates some overall organisation with paragraphs attempting to separate different years or trends, but there is no clear overall progression due to confusing transitions and mechanical use of cohesive devices like 'Moving further' and 'therefore'. Referencing is frequently unclear, such as ambiguous pronoun usage and mixing up first-time and returning visitor categories ('the number of visitors returned from caryl island'). Paragraphing is attempted, but internal logic within paragraphs is often disrupted by abrupt shifts in data reporting. To improve, the writer needs to ensure logical sequencing and clearer signposting of relationships between data points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The lexical range is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic data concepts, using words like 'dramatically', 'surge', and 'peak'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as 'inclined' instead of 'increased', 'returned people', and 'decresed'. Spelling errors like 'initally', 'contast', and 'decresed' also appear. While the vocabulary attempts to describe trends, the frequent inaccuracies in collocation and word choice restrict the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer uses a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors including missing capitalization ('caryl island'), punctuation errors (missing full stops, unspaced commas), subject-verb agreement issues ('both figure increased'), and incorrect prepositional usage. For example, 'at started visitors were returned' is ungrammatical. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted control over sentence structures and basic grammatical rules.
