Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph delineates the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.

Overall, the figures for both visitors experienced considerable fluctuations thrughout the the given period. Notably, returning visitors commenced with a lower figure but culminated with a more significant number. In contrast, the first time visitors had the lower visitors at the beginning but toward the last year they were greater.

In 2000, the returning visitors wre merely 3000 in number, and exhibited a surge to 10000 by 2002. Moreover, the figures soared, peaking at about 14500 in 2006 and ultimately declining slightly to around 12800 in the concluding year.

Regarding the first time visitors, their numbers were approximately 8000 at the starting year but saw a dramatic fall to 4000 in 2002. However, the figures recovered sharply to 6000 by 2004, and consequently ascending uncontrollably to just under 2000 in the final year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially because there are notable contradictions and factual inaccuracies regarding the visual data. For instance, the overview incorrectly states that returning visitors had a lower figure at the beginning and culminated with a more significant number compared to first-time visitors, which is accurate, but the conclusion of the overview becomes contradictory or confusing when discussing first-time visitors. Furthermore, in the final sentence, the student claims that first-time visitors ascended to 'just under 2000 in the final year', whereas the graph clearly shows an increase to nearly 12000 (around 11800). This misreading and misreporting of key data points prevent the response from achieving a higher score. While a basic summary and some comparisons are attempted, the inaccurate data reporting undermines the overall clarity and reliability of the information presented.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a clear overall arrangement with information grouped into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the trends. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'Regarding' are employed to guide the reader through the data. However, referencing and progression are occasionally hindered by mechanical or slightly faulty transitions. For example, the sentence 'Moreover, the figures soared' follows a somewhat disjointed transition from the previous clause, and some referencing within the body paragraphs lacks absolute precision. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the introduction, overview, and specific data details, but to reach the next band, the logical flow and the precision of cohesive links across the entire text need to be more seamless and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, with successful attempts at less common items such as 'delineates', 'considerable fluctuations', and 'culminated'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'thrughout' for 'throughout' and 'wre' for 'were'. Furthermore, some lexical choices are imprecise or awkward given the context, such as describing an upward trend as 'ascending uncontrollably'. While these errors and minor slips do not seriously impede communication, they reflect a level of control that prevents the vocabulary score from moving into a higher band. Developing greater precision in collocations and ensuring accurate spelling are key steps for improvement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

A mix of simple and complex sentence forms is attempted, such as introductory subordinate clauses ('Regarding the first time visitors, their numbers were...') and compound structures. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'the figures for both visitors experienced' and prepositions within patterns, such as 'at the starting year' instead of 'in the starting year' or 'at the start'. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning. To achieve a higher band, the writer would need to demonstrate a wider variety of complex structures with consistently higher accuracy and fewer minor grammatical slips.
