Student answer (Band 5.0)
The graph demonstrates the number of visitors who visited first time and thse wh are returning frm the Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. The red line shows the returning visitors and the blue shows first time visitors. The red line starts to increase from 3000 visitors in 2002 till 15000 visitors in 2006, then it starts decreasing and stops at 13500 visitors in 2008. However, the blue line starts decreasing from 8000 visitors to 4000 visitors from 2000 to 2002, then it starts increasing and stops at 12000 visitors in 2008. Moreover, in 2001, red and blue lines have same number of visitors which are 6000. The graph indicates that, at the start, the number of first time visitors were more than returning visitors but in 2002, the first time visitors are at lowest. The returning visitors were highest in 2006. The graph shows that, from 2000 to 2002, the red line constantly increases and the blue line constantly decreases.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response makes an attempt to summarise the main features of the line graph, but it only partially addresses the task requirements. While some key trends are noted, such as the overall rise in returning visitors, the data selection is somewhat mechanical and includes inaccurate details, such as mentioning data points between years like 2001 that are not present on the graph. The overview is weak and lacks a clear, overarching summary of the major trends. To reach the next level, the writer needs to provide a clearer overview and ensure all reported data points closely align with the visual information provided without misinterpreting the specific years.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response shows some organisation of ideas, but there is no clear overall progression, resulting in a somewhat disjointed narrative. The text is presented in a single dense block rather than being logically grouped into paragraphs, which hinders the readability and flow of the report. Cohesive devices are used in a repetitive manner, primarily relying on words like 'then' and 'however' to connect sentences. To improve, the writer should structure the response with clear paragraphing, separating the overview from the detailed body points, and use a wider variety of transitional phrases to guide the reader smoothly through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are several noticeable spelling mistakes and awkward phrasing throughout the text, such as 'thse wh are returning frm' and 'Caryl Island' with unnecessary articles. While the writer attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary related to the graph, lexical control is weak. To progress, the student needs to build a stronger repertoire of functional vocabulary for describing trends and changes, such as verbs and nouns denoting fluctuations and stabilization, and pay closer attention to basic spelling and word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple clauses and repetitive patterns when describing the lines. Attempts at more complex constructions are often faulty, and there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding verb tense consistency and prepositions, such as 'visited first time' and 'are returning'. Punctuation is also basic. To achieve a higher band, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with greater accuracy and ensure that verb tenses consistently match the past time frame depicted in the graph.
