Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response only partially addresses the task and fails to meet the minimum word requirement of 150 words, finishing at 127 words. While the candidate attempts to provide an overview and mentions several data points from the line graph, the information is presented in a fragmented manner. The overview is awkwardly placed and lacks clarity. Furthermore, some data points are inaccurate or poorly communicated, such as misinterpreting the final values and trends. To reach a higher level, the response must meet the length requirement, provide a clearer and better-integrated overview, and accurately report the main features and comparisons without relying on fragmented sentences.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organization attempted, but the text lacks a clear overall progression and logical structure. Paragraphing is severely disrupted, with the overview awkwardly breaking into the middle of the text and the entire response essentially clumped into a single, poorly structured block. Cohesive devices are used very mechanically and often inaccurately, such as repetitive use of transitional phrases like 'moving further' and 'moving towards rest of data'. Referencing between sentences is frequently unclear, making the flow difficult to follow. To improve, the student should structure the essay into distinct, logical paragraphs, such as an introduction with an overview followed by body paragraphs, and use cohesive devices more naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student makes noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation, such as 'digits' instead of 'figures' or 'numbers', 'new comers', 'come back tourist', 'continusliy incline', 'reapidly', and 'trouist'. These errors and awkward collocations cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth communication. To achieve a higher band score, the candidate needs to expand their vocabulary range specifically for describing trends and data, using terms like 'fluctuate', 'surge', or 'gradual rise', and pay closer attention to accurate spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple or poorly formed complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the graph illustrate', 'ratio of new trouist are'), incorrect prepositions ('in contrast of ration'), and missing articles. Punctuation is also poorly handled, with run-on sentences and misplaced periods. These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student must work on sentence boundaries, punctuation, and basic grammatical accuracy, ensuring correct verb tenses and agreement across all clauses.
