Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by presenting an overview and reporting the main trends and comparisons for both first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. The key features, such as the peak in returning visitors in 2006 and the lowest point for first-time visitors in 2002, are correctly highlighted. However, the data points for the initial year contain a minor misinterpretation regarding returning visitors, and some parts are slightly under-developed in terms of deeper comparative analysis, which prevents the response from reaching the higher bands. The overall progression of the data is clear and directly addresses the prompt requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two visitor categories. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Afterwards', and 'However' are employed to guide the reader through the data, although referencing and linking can occasionally feel slightly mechanical. To achieve a higher band, the transitions between sentences could be smoother and more sophisticated, ensuring that relationships between data points are integrated more seamlessly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying trends with terms such as 'rose dramatically', 'substantial rise', and 'sharp decline'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('superceed', 'tarvelled', 'substatial', 'falled') and occasional awkward word choices or prepositions, such as 'returned form' and 'in the whole tenure'. The student attempts less common lexical items, but the presence of these errors shows limitations in precise control. To reach the next band, a wider range of precise vocabulary needs to be used with greater accuracy and fewer spelling slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. Examples like 'which was the highest recorded figure' show the ability to construct relative clauses. There are, however, some noticeable grammatical errors, particularly missing articles ('Afterwards number', 'reached at 10,000') and awkward phrasing in verb patterns. These errors rarely impede communication, but they persist throughout the text. A higher band would require a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and more precise management of grammatical structures and articles.
