Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task and presents an overview with the main trends. However, some parts are more fully developed than others, and there are some inaccuracies in the data reported. For instance, the starting year for returning visitors is misread or confused in the body paragraphs, as the text states 'In 2002, there are 3000 returning visitors recorded and it continued to increase at 10,000 in 2002', which presents contradictory figures for the same year. Additionally, the overview mentions a declining trend for first-time visitors for the 'first two years', but the graph shows a drop from 2000 to 2002 followed by growth. This places the response securely at the band where relevant information is provided, but some details are under-developed or inexact.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and logical progression throughout. Information is organised into clear paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by an overview, and separate body paragraphs for each category of visitor. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'On the other hand', and 'Whereas' are used adequately to guide the reader through the data, although referencing and mechanical links occasionally feel a bit rigid. Overall, the structural progression meets the criteria for a clear logical flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive verbs and nouns such as 'fluctuating trend', 'significant drop', and 'reaching its peak'. However, there are some word-choice and collocation errors, such as saying 'tourists visited' instead of 'tourists visited' being formed well, or writing 'declining trend for the the first two years'. There are also minor awkward phrasings like 'recorded higher than', but these do not impede communication, reflecting a standard performance for this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and time markers. However, there are frequent errors in verb tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions inside grammatical patterns. Examples include 'there are 8000 tourists visited' (tense and structure error), 'dropped at 4000' (incorrect preposition), and mixing past and present tenses ('is a significant drop'). While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they are frequent enough to prevent the grammar score from rising higher.
