Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. The First time visitors are marked witha blue line while the Returning visitors are marked with a red line. It shows that the returning visitors were less than half as compared to first time vistors at Caryl Island in 2000. But in 2002, the number of first time visitors signiicantly dropped, while the number of returning visitors experienced a surge, scaling to an impressive 10000. However both of the visitors saw a rise from 2002 til 2006 where the returning visitors showed a decline of almost a 1000 visitors in the span of 2 years, whereas the first timers continued to grow, reaching nearly 12000 visitors in 2008. The returning visitor's peak was in 2006 with a number of around 15000. The graph showed that both metrics ended up higher than they started. Even after the dip the first time visitors experienced in 2002.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially and fails to meet the minimum length requirement, falling short by six words (excluding prompt-copied text). While you attempt to present an overview and mention several data points, the selection of information lacks balance. You focus heavily on individual years without fully integrating broader trends or making comprehensive comparisons across the two visitor categories. For example, you correctly note that returning visitors peaked in 2006 at around 15,000, but other comparisons are superficial or under-developed. To achieve a higher band, you must ensure you meet the word count requirement, present a clearer, more cohesive overview of main trends, and thoroughly support all reported data with well-balanced comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation in the sequencing of your ideas, but the response lacks clear overall progression and suffers from poor paragraphing. The entire body of your text is presented as a single, dense block, which hinders readability. Furthermore, cohesive devices are used inadequately or mechanically, with abrupt transitions such as 'But in 2002' and 'However both of the visitors'. Referencing and logical progression are occasionally unclear, particularly towards the end where your sentence fragments and loose punctuation disrupt the flow of information. To improve in this criterion, you should divide your report into clear paragraphs—typically an introduction with an overview followed by body paragraphs—and use a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices to link your ideas smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic information about the graph, using terms like 'surge', 'drop', and 'decline'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and spelling mistakes that detract from the quality of your writing, such as 'vistors', 'signiicantly', and the phrase 'both of the visitors' instead of 'both categories of visitors'. The range of vocabulary lacks flexibility and precision, relying heavily on simple descriptors rather than varied, sophisticated academic synonyms. To move up to a higher band, you need to expand your lexical range by incorporating more precise vocabulary for describing data trends and fluctuations, and eliminate basic spelling and word choice errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrate a limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple statements with occasional attempts at complex forms that often turn out faulty. There are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including article misuse ('The First time visitors'), punctuation errors ('marked witha'), and fragmented sentences that undermine grammatical integrity, as seen in the isolated fragment 'Even after the dip the first time visitors experienced in 2002.' These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve your grammar score, you should practise constructing complex sentences with accurate subordinate clauses, pay closer attention to articles and prepositions, and ensure that your sentences are complete rather than broken off incorrectly.
