Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Cartyl Island over a eight-year period from 2000 to 2008.

Overall, both the categories, initially, followed an opposite path. However, the figures of both the groups started to rise gradually until the number of returning visitors reduced in the end of the period.

In the initial period, first time visitors were 8000, quite higher than number of returning visitors which stood at 3000. Both followed an inverse pattern, figures of the new visitors decreased significantly from 8000 to 4000 whereas returning visitors faced a surge in their figures from 3000 to 10,000 till 2002. Consequently, the number of returning visitos surpassed the figures of first time visitors and the former continued to be greater than the latter.

Subsequently, figures for both the categories increased over the years till 2006, reaching around 10,000 and 15,000 respectively for first time visitors and returning visitors. Thereafter, the number of previous guests fell drastically from 15,000 to a little over 13,000 while by contrast first time visitors kept on rising and hit the mark of 12,000 people in the year 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons of the line graph between 2000 and 2008. The overview captures the general trajectory of the data, noting that the two categories initially moved in opposite directions before both experiencing upward trends, followed by a divergence at the end. Key data points, such as the initial figures of 8,000 and 3,000 and the peak figures in 2006, are accurately cited and compared. The response extends and supports its ideas well throughout the body paragraphs, fulfilling the expectations for this band level, though a slightly sharper focus on the final 2008 convergence point would have enhanced the precision of the overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The report exhibits a clear logical organization and progression throughout. The information is divided into a logical sequence starting with an introduction and overview, followed by chronological body paragraphs detailing the specific trends and data shifts. Cohesive devices such as 'Consequently', 'Subsequently', and 'Thereafter' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data, although their application occasionally borders on mechanical. Paragraphing is managed appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct function in developing the response. Referencing between ideas remains clear, ensuring the relationship between first-time and returning visitors is consistently maintained.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'inverse pattern', 'surge', and 'drastically'. However, there are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as misspelling 'Cartyl Island' (instead of Caryl Island) in the introduction, and a typographical error in 'visitos'. Word choice is generally appropriate for describing visual data, utilizing terms like 'rose gradually', 'decreased significantly', and 'surpassed'. While the range demonstrates sufficient flexibility to communicate the trends clearly, occasional awkward phrasing or minor spelling slips prevent the vocabulary from achieving a higher level of precision and sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and varied introductory phrases effectively. There is a good control of past tense verbs used to narrate the trends over the specified timeframe. A few minor grammatical and punctuation errors persist, such as the article omission in 'over a eight-year period' (should be 'an eight-year period') and a slight phrasing issue in 'reduced in the end of the period' rather than 'at the end'. Nevertheless, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication, with many sentences remaining completely error-free.
