Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main features of the line graph regarding first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island, but the treatment is somewhat mechanical and limited. While some key data points are mentioned, such as the peak of returning visitors in 2006 at around 15000, other descriptions lack clarity or accuracy. For instance, stating that the number of visitors became constant in the first two years misinterprets the distinct movements shown in the data. Furthermore, some comparisons are underdeveloped or confusingly presented, such as the concluding summary regarding fluctuation. To improve, the response needs a clearer overall trend summary and a more precise selection and reporting of the most significant data points without misrepresenting the visual information.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text demonstrates some overall organisation, but the logical progression is hindered by poor paragraphing and a lack of cohesive control. The entire main body of the text is lumped together into a single dense block of writing, which makes the response difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are used repetitively or inaccurately; phrases like 'On other hand', 'In contrast', and 'On the other hand' are overused in close proximity without adding smooth transitions. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, leaving the reader to puzzle out which category of visitor is being discussed. To reach a higher level, the writer must divide the response into clear paragraphs, such as an introduction, an overview, and distinct body paragraphs, while using a wider and more natural variety of cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer successfully employs some topic-appropriate terms such as 'visitors', 'travelled', 'increased', 'declined', and 'steady'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, including spelling mistakes like 'visiters', and awkward word choices such as 'coming again' instead of 'returning'. Additionally, the range of vocabulary is restricted, relying heavily on repetitive phrasing like 'amount of first time visitors' and 'increasing steadily'. To improve lexical resource, the student should aim to incorporate less common vocabulary and synonyms to describe trends, ensure correct spelling, and pay closer attention to natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response shows a limited range of sentence structures, with frequent errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. While the writer attempts some complex sentences, such as 'travellers who went again to Caryl Island peaked in 2006 around 15000', many constructions are faulty due to missing articles, incorrect prepositions, or awkward phrasing, as seen in 'with starting at around 3000' and 'The number of visitors first time visiting'. Punctuation and spacing issues are also present, such as missing spaces after periods and commas. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, improve punctuation, and reduce the frequency of errors in word order and prepositional phrases.
