Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, coming in significantly short at only 106 words, with 17 of those copied directly from the prompt. Furthermore, the task is only partially addressed. While the student attempts to report some figures for first-time and returning visitors, the data selection is erratic and lacks a cohesive overview of the main trends. Key features, such as the overall trajectories across the eight-year period, are poorly articulated, and some reported figures show inaccuracies when compared against the visual data. To improve, the writer must ensure the length requirement is fully met and provide a clear overview alongside a systematic reporting of key data points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
The response displays some organization, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information is confusing; for example, data for returning visitors and first-time visitors is mixed haphazardly across paragraphs without a logical structure. Cohesive devices are minimal and mechanical, and referencing between sentences is weak, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of information. To move up, the writer needs to group related data logically—such as dedicating separate paragraphs to each visitor category or comparing trends chronologically—and use clearer cohesive markers to link sentences and paragraphs smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, reflecting a basic range suitable for the task. There are noticeable lexical and spelling errors, such as 'vist' instead of 'visit', 'shrinked' instead of 'shrank', and 'rised' instead of 'rose'. The misuse of words and word forms can cause occasional difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer should expand their lexical repertoire to include more precise vocabulary for describing statistical trends, such as 'fluctuate', 'decline', or 'plateau', and pay closer attention to word forms and standard spelling conventions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response relies heavily on a limited range of sentence structures, primarily simple sentences linked improperly with commas, leading to run-on sentence errors (e.g., 'the graph shows data of visitors from 2000 to 2008, the blue line shows...'). There are frequent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and capitalization, such as the use of present tense where past tense is required ('tell us', 'is shrinked'). These frequent errors can impede communication and strain the reader. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, ensure accurate tense consistency for past data, and use correct punctuation to separate independent clauses.
