Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response partially addresses the task by attempting to report the main features and trends of the line graph regarding visitors to Caryl Island. An overview is provided, though it contains inaccurate statements, such as claiming that returned visitors were higher in number across the entire 2000-2008 span when first-time visitors were actually higher at the start. Key data points are mentioned, such as the initial figures and the peaks in 2006, but some data reporting is imprecise or confusingly phrased, such as stating that returned visitors in 2000 were 'below 4000' or citing the final 2008 figure as 13500. To reach the next level, the overview needs to accurately reflect the broader trends shown in the graph, and all selected data points should be reported with greater precision and clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response shows some basic organisation by breaking the text into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the abrupt transitional phrases like 'Contemporary' instead of 'contemporaneously' or 'Meanwhile'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the single-sentence paragraphs and isolated fragments, such as 'n 2000, the number of visitors...', disrupt the flow of the text. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the relationships between data points. To improve, the writer should use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices to link sentences and paragraphs logically, ensuring a smooth and progressive development of information.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to communicate the basic topic of visitors to an island. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'constitutes', 'decline', and 'continously', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable lexical and spelling errors like 'Noticeble' and 's;ightly'. Word choice is sometimes unnatural or imprecise for data reporting, such as using 'amount' instead of 'figure' or 'level' when describing visitor numbers. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider and more precise range of topic-specific vocabulary and collocation suitable for describing statistical trends, while eliminating spelling and word-choice mistakes that occasionally hinder clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple constructions and repetitive subject-verb-object patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to awkward phrasing and grammatical errors. There are frequent issues with tense usage, such as mixing past and present forms inappropriately ('Its showed', 'the returned visitors have been'), as well as errors in prepositions and articles. Punctuation is also problematic, including missing capitalization at the start of sentences and typographical errors like 'n 2000'. To achieve a higher score, the writer must demonstrate better control over a wider variety of grammatical structures, particularly tense consistency and complex clause formation, while significantly reducing the frequency of basic errors.
