Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates first time travellers and returning travellers who travelled to a destination between 2000 and 2008.

Overall, the number of first time visitors fell initially and then increased steadily towards the end. The number returning visitors soared initially and then rose steadily before showing a slight decline in the end.

From 2000 to 2018, the number of travellers returning from the Caryl island surged from approximately 3000 to 10000, while number of first time visitors declined significantly from 8000 to 4000. Later on, in the next two years both of the first time and returning individuals rose gradually from 4000 to 6000 and 10000 to 12000, respectively.

Furthermore, in between 2004 and 2006 the number of returning visitors peaked at around 15000, while first comers increased consistently, reaching upto 10000. Conversely, between 2006 and 2008, the number of returning visitors decllined to approximately 12500 , and first comers showed an increasing trend reaching at around 12000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main trends and making relevant comparisons between the two visitor categories. However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the timeline mentions the year 2018 instead of 2008, and the peak value for returning visitors between 2004 and 2006 is stated as around 15000 (when it is approximately 15200, which is acceptable) but some other figures are slightly imprecise or under-developed. The overview outlines the general trends correctly, but the overall development of ideas could be more thoroughly supported with precise data points to reach a higher level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, overview, and separate body paragraphs covering different time periods. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Furthermore' and 'Conversely', though referencing is sometimes slightly mechanical or imprecise. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the information logically, but the progression between sentences could flow more smoothly to achieve a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'surged', 'declined significantly', and 'peaked'. However, there are occasional word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'travellers returning from the Caryl island' (instead of visitors to) and 'first comers' (instead of first-time visitors). Spelling is generally accurate, and these minor lexical slips do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over time clauses and comparative structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('while number of first time visitors') and minor prepositions issues, but these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of sentences remain clear. The punctuation is generally well handled.
