Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response sits at this band because the length requirement is not met, as the text falls short of the 150-word minimum (excluding copied rubric words). While the student attempts to summarise the line graph, the response only minimally addresses the task. There are several inaccuracies in reporting the data; for example, the student writes that returning visitors started to reach a peak from approximately 3000 in 2000, and later misinterprets the 2004 and 2008 figures for returning visitors (stating they reached 14000 and 13500 incorrectly). Furthermore, the overview is missing or unclear, and key trends are not adequately developed or compared. To reach a higher level, the writer must ensure the word count exceeds the minimum, provide a clear overall summary of the main trends, and accurately report the data points without factual errors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
Coherence and cohesion are limited at this level. The text is divided into three paragraphs, but information and ideas are not arranged in a fully coherent manner. The second paragraph attempts to list data chronologically (2000, 2002, 2004), but it becomes a confusing run-on block of data points: 'fisrt time visitors faced a significant decline and then again started to reach the peak point while returning visitors constantly faced peak and then started to decrease.' Paragraphing is somewhat attempted, but transitions and logical progression between sentences are weak. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer should use clear paragraphing (such as separating the overview from the detail paragraphs), employ accurate cohesive devices to link ideas, and avoid cramming multiple years and trends into a single, confusing sentence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource shown is basic and repetitive, reflecting this band. The vocabulary is adequate for a minimal attempt, using words like 'visitors', 'island', 'decline', and 'peak'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('fisrt' instead of 'first'), awkward word choices, and repetitions (e.g., 'faced a significant decline', 'reached the numbers'). Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited accuracy and control, and some expressions lack natural collocation. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary, use synonyms to avoid repeating words like 'visitors' and 'reached', and eliminate spelling mistakes by proofreading their work carefully before finishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range and accuracy are restricted to simple and some attempted complex structures, accompanied by frequent errors. There are issues with punctuation, run-on sentences lacking commas (e.g., 'In 2000 the number...'), and article usage ('the first time visitors'). Additionally, verb tense control and clause linking are problematic, as seen in repetitive and clunky phrasing such as 'who who visited' and sentences joined incorrectly with 'while'. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve in this area, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of accurate sentence structures, pay closer attention to basic punctuation and articles, and ensure verb forms match the past time frame consistently.
