Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of first time visitors and returning visitors in Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.

Overall, returning visitors have experienced significant growth with higher number compared to first time visitors at the end. Meanwhile, first time visitors had higher number at the start, fluctuation in between and overall increased at the end year.

In 2000, the number of people who visited for the first time accounted for about 8000, experienced a decline between the first two years and reached to 4000 and finally reached a peak of 12000 in 2008. Both categories had the equal number of visitors which is 6000 in 2001 .

In contrast, the quantity of individuals who had visited the Island more than once had lesser number compared to first time visitors which was accounted for apporximately 3000. After that, the visitors gradually increased and reached a peak of 15000 in 2006 and fell to 13500 which is still the higher number compare to first time visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview and reporting the main trends for both categories. The overview correctly identifies that returning visitors experienced significant growth to finish higher, while first-time visitors fluctuated before increasing at the end. However, some data points are misreported or imprecise; for instance, the final peak for first-time visitors in 2008 is stated as 12,000 rather than the approximate 11,800 shown in the graph, and the peak for returning visitors in 2006 is given as 15,000 instead of 15,200. Furthermore, the mention of visitors being equal at 6,000 in 2001 refers to a year that is not explicitly marked with a gridline on the x-axis, representing minor over-generalisation or flawed data reading. Some details are under-developed, keeping the task achievement score at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure dividing the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'Meanwhile, first time visitors had higher number at the start' lacks smooth linkage, and the phrase 'After that' in the final paragraph is repetitive and simplistic. Referencing and logical progression between sentences occasionally falter, such as the sudden introduction of 2001 data in the first body paragraph which disrupts the chronological flow. Paragraphing is present and separates ideas adequately, but greater control over cohesive devices and referencing is needed to achieve a more natural progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'fluctuation', 'gradually increased', and 'quantity of individuals'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling. For example, the student writes 'apporximately' (spelling error) and uses awkward phrasing like 'had higher number' instead of 'had a higher number' or 'were greater in number'. Additionally, 'lesser number' is used incorrectly instead of 'a lower number'. These vocabulary and spelling errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score, as precision and natural collocation are lacking.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses ('people who visited for the first time') and comparative structures ('which is still the higher number compare to first time visitors'). However, there are some grammar and punctuation errors present throughout the text. Instances include missing articles ('in Caryl Island' instead of 'on Caryl Island', 'had higher number'), preposition errors ('reached to 4000' instead of 'reached 4000'), and faulty verb forms ('compare to' instead of 'compared to'). Despite these recurring errors in grammar and prepositions, the structures are varied enough and the mistakes rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning without severe difficulty.
