Student answer (Band 4.5)

The line graph illustrates the numerical data of first time visitor and coming back touristis, who came Caryl island between 2000 to 2008.

Overall, it is clrealy evident that number of visitors who came first to Caryl island accelerated, while data of returning tourists from island was declined.

It is crystal clear from line graph in 2002 firstly visitor's count is decreased from 8000 members to 4000. Nevertheless, count began to soared in 2004 that was 6000 similarly count is increased in 2006 and 2008.

On the other hand, count of returning visitors was 2500 aproximately in 2000.

It was gradually increased between 2002 to 2006 from 10000 to 14000 respectively. While data was diminshed slightely in 2008 to 13000. There were no big changes shown in line graph for both visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response responds to the task only minimally and fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, coming in at 132 words. While the student attempts to summarise the line graph by mentioning first-time and returning visitors, the data reported contains significant inaccuracies and misinterpretations. For instance, the overview incorrectly claims that the number of returning tourists declined overall, whereas the chart shows they actually increased from 3,000 to 13,400 over the period. Furthermore, important data points are misread or poorly conveyed, and the conclusion states that there were no big changes, which contradicts the substantial fluctuations visible in the graph. To improve, the writer must ensure all reported data accurately reflects the visual prompt, develop a clear and factually correct overview, and write at least the minimum required word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

Information and ideas are not arranged coherently throughout the response. Although the text is broken into short paragraphs, the overall progression is difficult to follow due to poor logical sequencing and confusing transitions. Cohesive devices are used rather clumsily, such as 'On the other hand' incorrectly introducing a category rather than a contrasting trend, and referencing is frequently unclear, with pronouns and phrases like 'data of returning tourists from island' lacking precision. The concluding sentence ('There were no big changes shown in line graph for both visitors') contradicts the earlier body paragraphs and disrupts the internal logic of the text. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to ensure clear overall progression, use cohesive devices more accurately to link related ideas, and maintain a consistent and logical argument from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, employing a limited range that occasionally strains the reader's understanding. There are frequent word choice, word form, and spelling errors, such as 'touristis', 'clrealy', 'soared' used as an infinitive after 'began to', 'diminshed', and 'slightely'. The student also uses awkward phrasing like 'numerical data of first time visitor and coming back touristis' and 'visitor's count is decreased from 8000 members'. Less common lexical items are attempted but handled inaccurately. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding their range of functional vocabulary for describing data trends, such as accurate nouns and verbs of change, and pay closer attention to spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of structures, with frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. Sentence forms are predominantly simple or faulty attempts at complex structures, marred by poor tense usage and missing articles. Examples include 'number of visitors who came first to Caryl island accelerated, while data of returning tourists from island was declined' (mixing past simple and passive structures incorrectly) and 'in 2002 firstly visitor's count is decreased'. There are also persistent errors with prepositions, plurals, and subject-verb agreement throughout the text. To move up to a higher band, the student must demonstrate a wider mix of error-free complex sentence forms, improve control over verb tenses when describing past data, and eliminate basic grammatical inaccuracies.
