Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt and attempts to report the main features of the line graph regarding first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. However, the performance is limited because some key data points are incorrectly stated or imprecise, and the overview contains specific data points rather than broad trends. For instance, stating that "in 2000 for about 8000 of visitors visited... whereas nearly 2000 visitors were those who returned" is inaccurate according to the visual data, where returning visitors started at around 3,000. Additionally, the overview section blurs the line between summary and detailed body data. To move to a higher band, the overview should clearly highlight general trends without embedding specific figures, and all major trends and peaks (such as the 2006 peak for returning visitors reaching roughly 15,200) should be reported more accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then into body details. Paragraphing is attempted, with the text broken into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and a concluding analytical paragraph. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. Expressions such as "With regard to, the ratio of visitors" demonstrate awkward transitional phrasing, and referencing is not always clear, leading to a somewhat disjointed flow. To achieve a higher band, cohesive devices should be used more naturally and flexibly, and referencing within and between sentences must be smoother to ensure a clear, uninterrupted progression of ideas throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but the range is quite limited. The student makes numerous lexical errors involving word choice, collocation, and word form, such as "reutrning visitors", "continous years", and referring to visitor numbers as "for twice or thrice". These errors and awkward phrasings sometimes create strain for the reader. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider and more precise range of vocabulary, demonstrating better control of less common lexical items (such as 'fluctuate', 'surge', or 'plateau') and ensuring that word choices and spellings are accurate and appropriate for an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but the attempts at complex structures are frequently marred by grammatical errors. Issues include awkward prepositions and phrasing within clauses, such as "visitors who visited caryl island for first time and also returning visitors for the year 2000 to 2008" and "for about 15000 of visitors visited". There are also punctuation and capitalization issues (e.g., lowercase "caryl island"). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to detract from the quality of the writing. To improve, the writer must exercise better control over basic and complex grammatical structures, ensuring accurate verb forms, articles, and prepositions.
