Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the line graph, but it only partially addresses the task requirements due to significant inaccuracies in data reporting and chronological confusion. For example, the student states that data begins in '2003' rather than 2000, and confuses years and values, such as stating that visitor numbers reached 4000 in 2002 'which was the highest'. While there is an attempt at an overall trend description ('both visitors upward trend'), the lack of clarity and frequent data misinterpretations prevent the response from being fully developed or accurate.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text shows some overall organization by attempting an introductory paragraph followed by body paragraphs, but there is no clear progression of ideas overall. Cohesive devices are either inaccurate, mechanical, or overused, with frequent repetitive phrases like 'who visited Caryl Island' or 'who travelled caryI Isaland' attached to almost every data point. Paragraphing is also poorly managed, leading to a disjointed flow that makes the relationships between the data points difficult for the reader to follow smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, with frequent spelling mistakes ('illustartes', 'caryI Isaland', 'continuoes') and inaccurate word choices such as using 'percentage' instead of 'number' and 'tourism' instead of 'tourists'. The student attempts less common vocabulary like 'dramatically rose', but these attempts are undermined by severe collocation errors and improper word forms. These noticeable lexical errors and spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that contain frequent errors. There are persistent problems with verb tense consistency, missing auxiliary verbs, incorrect prepositions, and heavy punctuation errors, such as run-on sentences separated only by commas or semicolons misused with lowercase letters (e.g., 'trend; However', 'begin with,In'). These frequent grammatical and mechanical errors cause considerable strain and difficulty for the reader.
