Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of visitors travel for first time and came back again on Caryl island between 2000 and 2008.

Overall, the proportion of one time visitor was higher but with the time, the higher visitors was return visitors. However, the trend for both the visitor were fluctuated.

On the side of first time visitor, the number of visitors visited in 2000 was 8,000 which was reduced to its half by 2002, while it had rose significantly to 6000 in year 2004. After two years, again this number reached to its starting vaule of 8,000 and gradually increased to 12,000 in 2008, the highest number of all time.

On the side of return visitors, in 2000, the number was very low at 3,000 whereas it showed a sudden rose in visitors by 3 times in 2000 and landed at 10,000 in 2002. This number kept increasing untill it reaches to 15,000 in 2006, facing it's highest number. Meanwhile, in next two years, the visitors decreased by 2,000, landed at 13,000 in end.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task and successfully presents an overview of the main trends. The key features of both first-time and returning visitors are identified, including starting points, fluctuations, and final figures. However, some aspects of the response lean towards a partial treatment of the data, as certain comparisons are less developed, reflecting characteristics of the current band level. The overview could be more precise regarding the relative dominance of the two visitor types over the period, but overall, the report satisfies the core requirements of the task by clearly outlining the general direction of the data lines.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The report presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to group information logically into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for each visitor category. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or slightly faulty, with awkward transitions such as 'On the side of first time visitor' and 'On the side of return visitors'. Referencing is generally understandable, but the progression within paragraphs could be smoother to secure a higher level of flow and connectivity.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'gradually increased', and 'reached to its highest number'. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as 'visitors travel for first time' instead of 'first-time visitors', 'vaule' instead of 'value', and 'sudden rose' instead of 'sudden rise'. Spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable throughout the text, though they do not seriously impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms and tense consistency, such as 'visitors travel', 'visitors visited in 2000 was 8,000 which was reduced', and 'untill it reaches'. Additionally, issues with prepositions and articles appear regularly, such as 'on Caryl island' and 'in end'. While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, their frequency indicates limitations in grammatical accuracy that prevent the response from achieving a higher score.
