Student answer (Band 6.0)
The graph gives information about the number of first time visitors and returning visitors of Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008.
Overall, the number of first visitors started with a good number and also improved through the given period. Meanwhile, the number of returning visitors were very less but eventually the number improved.
In 2000, the number of people who visited the island first time was 8000 and it fell to 4000 in 2002. After falling, the number of first time visitors started to gardually increase, reaching approximately 10,000 visitors in 2006 and in the last year the number of first visitors almost reached to 12,000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview and reporting the main features and trends of both visitor types on Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008. The main features are appropriately identified, such as the initial drop and subsequent recovery of first time visitors, and the peak of returning visitors in 2006. However, some parts of the task are developed more fully than others; for example, the description of trends relies on simple reporting of numerical points rather than fully extending the comparisons between the two groups. Nevertheless, an overall trend is provided, and the data cited is generally accurate according to the visual reference, placing this response firmly in the target band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for each category of visitor. Information and ideas are logically sequenced. However, cohesion within and between sentences is at times mechanical or slightly repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'In 2000, the number...' and 'In [Year], the number reached to...'. Referencing and logical progression are clear overall, but the use of cohesive devices could be more varied and flexible to ensure smoother transitions between sentences and ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'dramatically increased', 'peaked', and 'approximately'. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'a good number' instead of a higher or significant figure, and 'very less' instead of much lower or fewer. Spelling and word choice errors, including the misspelling 'gardually', do not impede communication but prevent the response from achieving a higher band. To improve further, the writer should focus on precise collocations and a wider variety of vocabulary to describe trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with attempts at subordinate clauses and time markers. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'the number of returning visitors were very less' (subject-verb agreement error with 'were') and 'reached to 12,000' (unnecessary preposition after 'reached'). Punctuation is generally acceptable. While these errors occur, they are not overly frequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the sentence structures to remain clear and understandable throughout the response.
