Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting inaccurate and confused data from the line graph. For example, the student states that in 2000 first-time visitors were in the majority at around 8,000 while returning visitors were around 2,600, whereas the graph actually shows returning visitors at 3,000 and first-time visitors at 8,000, but with returning visitors starting lower and then rising sharply. Furthermore, the description contains factual contradictions and trails off entirely at the end with the incomplete sentence 'returning visitors were in strong position od'. Because the information presented is largely inaccurate and the writing is incomplete, the response fails to fully cover the main features and trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates some overall organisation, attempting an introductory overview followed by body paragraphs detailing the trends. However, there is no clear progression across the text, and the abrupt ending prevents a logical conclusion. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as starting sentences with 'conversely' or 'for the same period' where they do not logically connect the ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph breaks off mid-sentence, which disrupts the flow and cohesion of the writing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'dramatic increase', 'fluctuation', and 'significant increase', but also makes noticeable errors in word choice and data reporting, such as describing returning visitors as being 'in very population of about 2600' or using 'od' instead of 'of'. While the vocabulary is generally understandable, these recurring lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple and flawed complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues such as 'the returning visitors was in majority', missing articles ('the Caryl island', 'in last years'), and incorrect prepositions or prepositional patterns. Attempts at complex clauses often result in faulty structures and run-on sentences. These frequent errors require the reader to decode the meaning and hinder the overall grammatical accuracy of the response.
