Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of people visiting Caryl Island for the first time in contrast to the number of tourists exiting the same island between 2000 and 2008.

Overall, except the first two years, the number of people exiting the country has always been higher compared to the people coming in the island.

In 2000, the number of individuals visiting the Island were reported to be 8000. By the end of the next two years, the inflow of tourist declined by fifty percent. A slight recovery was seen in 2004 where the visitors were recorded to be 6000. From this point onwards the number of visitors increased gradually. By the end of the period, the number of first time tourists at Caryl Island was recored to be the highest at 12000.

Moving towards the visitors exiting the Island, in 2000, approximately 3000 people flew back from the island. The following years, numbers kept on increasing. In 2002, 10000 people returned to their country which is more than twice the people who visited during that same period. Throughout 2004 and 2006, equal increment of 2000 was seen. Towards the end of the period a slight decrease is seen for the very first time across 8 years clsoing at approximately 13500 in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the main parts of the task by attempting to report data from the line graph regarding first-time visitors and returning visitors to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. However, there are significant comprehension errors in the student's interpretation of the visual data. Specifically, the student misinterprets the category of 'returning visitors' as 'people exiting the country' or 'people flying back from the island', which distorts the core meaning of the chart. While an overview is attempted, it is partially inaccurate due to this fundamental misunderstanding of the categories. To reach a higher band, the response must accurately interpret all data series without misreading visitor statistics as migration or departure data, and provide a fully developed overview that captures the main trends clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical division into paragraphs, featuring an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for each visitor category. The writing moves logically from 2000 through to the end of the period. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, such as 'In 2000', 'By the end of the next two years', and 'Moving towards'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes a little mechanical or repetitive, and the logical flow is slightly hampered by the conceptual misinterpretation of the data categories. To move to the next level, the student should ensure that cohesive ties connect ideas smoothly without relying on formulaic transitions, and maintain clear referencing throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items and specific terminology such as 'inflow', 'fifty percent', 'gradually', and 'increment'. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'people exiting the country' instead of returning visitors, and minor spelling slips like 'clsoing'. Word choice errors impede precise communication regarding the visual data. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to use a wider and more precise range of vocabulary related to data trends and collocations, avoiding misinterpretations of data labels and ensuring accurate word forms and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, using structures such as dependent clauses ('where the visitors were recorded to be 6000') and comparative forms. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors present, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'years, the'), subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'the number of individuals... were reported' instead of 'was reported'), and minor prepositional errors. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede overall communication. To improve further, the student should aim for greater control over complex sentence structures, ensure strict subject-verb agreement, and polish punctuation and article usage to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences.
