Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line chart illustrates the figures of tourists who visited Caryl Island for the first time and revisiting between 2000 and 2008.

Overall, the figures of returning tourists had increased rapidly before dropping, whereas first time visitors' figures declined initially and rose magnificently in the following years.

Taking about returning visitors, in 2000 numbers of tourists stood at approximately 3000 which increased considerably and reached to 10,000 in 2002. Thereafter, it exhibited a slight fall but continued to grow until 2006, before experiencing a dramatic drop and finished at nearly 13,500.

By contrast, the first time visitors followed opposite trend in initial years. The figures accounted for 8000 tourists in 2000 which declined to its half around 4000. Thereby, trend changed from 2000. The number of visitors recorded rapid increase and reached 8000 by 2006. This trend continued to follow and reached just below 12000 by the end of the period. Although figures of returning tourists declined in the final years, it still remained higher than the first time visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all parts of the task by covering the main trends for both first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. Your overview correctly highlights the contrasting general movements of the two categories. You have also provided a good selection of key data points, such as noting that returning visitors peaked in 2006 at 15,200 and that first-time visitors grew to nearly 12,000 by 2008. However, your response sits at this level rather than a higher one because there are a few minor data misreadings, such as stating that returning visitors finished at nearly 13,500 in 2008 and stating that first-time visitor figures reached 8000 by 2006 rather than the actual 9300. Additionally, the final sentence contains a slight data confusion regarding the end of the period.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your response demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical arrangement, moving from an introduction to an overview, followed by separate body paragraphs for returning and first-time visitors, and concluding with a comparative summary sentence. You make use of standard cohesive devices and transition signals to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'Taking about', 'By contrast', and 'Thereafter'. To move further into higher bands, you need to refine your cohesive devices to avoid slightly mechanical phrases like 'Taking about' and ensure referencing remains precise throughout the body paragraphs without occasional awkward transitions between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'fluctuated', 'considerable', 'dramatic drop', and 'opposite trend'. You also make reasonable attempts at less common lexical items related to trend description. However, your vocabulary score is limited by occasional inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as using 'revisiting' instead of 'returning visitors', 'figures of tourists' rather than 'number of tourists', and an awkward prepositional phrase in 'reached to 10,000'. There are also minor awkward collocations, such as 'rose magnificently', which prevent this criterion from reaching a higher level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms across your response, demonstrating control over past tense narrative structures for graph data, such as 'increased considerably and reached' and 'followed opposite trend'. There are some error-free sentences, particularly in your overview and concluding remarks. However, your score reflects the presence of several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including missing articles ('followed opposite trend'), minor preposition errors ('in initial years' instead of 'in the initial years'), and awkward verb patterns ('This trend continued to follow'). These errors do not impede communication, but their persistence keeps the grammar at this band.
