Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by presenting an overview and reporting the main trends for both categories of visitors on Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. The selection of data points is mostly accurate, noting key figures such as the initial numbers and the peaks (e.g., first-time visitors reaching 11,800 and returning visitors peaking around 15,200). However, the overview is somewhat simplistic, starting with awkward phrasing like 'Overall firstly the first time visitors is at top', and some details are slightly underdeveloped or confused, such as the initial statement regarding which group was higher at the start. To reach a higher band, the response needs a clearer, more polished overview that highlights the broader trends without getting bogged down in minor chronological details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The report demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. The essay is divided into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to each visitor category. Cohesive devices are used to signal shifts in the data, such as 'Turning to the data' and 'Moreover', though referencing is occasionally imprecise ('it is replaced by returning visitors and remain at top'). Paragraphing is functional, separating the introduction/overview from the body details, but paragraph breaks could be better utilised to separate the two data series completely. To move further up the scale, the use of cohesive markers needs to be smoother and less mechanical, ensuring seamless transitions between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate to communicate the main trends, attempting some less common items such as 'steady downfall', 'grow sharply', and 'peak'. However, there are notable limitations and lexical errors in word choice, collocation, and form, such as 'observe a steady downfall' (instead of 'experiences' or 'sees'), 'gets its top data recorded' (instead of 'reaches its peak'), and punctuation and capitalisation slips (e.g., starting sentences with lowercase 'then'). Spelling and word formation are generally clear enough not to impede communication, but inaccuracies prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. Incorporating more precise academic verbs and nouns for describing trends, alongside correct collocations, is necessary for improvement.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over tense usage for past data (e.g., 'starts its journey', 'observes'). However, there are frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles (e.g., 'at top', 'in end of period'), subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'first time visitors stays', 'it still at first place' missing a verb), and awkward phrasing. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they persist throughout the text and restrict the score. To attain a higher band, the writer must reduce grammatical errors in basic structures, ensure accurate article usage, and incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentences.
