Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by providing a clear summary of the overall trends and key features of the data regarding first-time and returning visitors to Caryl Island. An overview is present, and the main data points, such as the peak for returning visitors in 2006 and the fluctuations for first-time visitors, are accurately reported and compared. However, some aspects of the response sit comfortably at this level because certain data points are under-developed or lack full contextualisation. For instance, the discussion of the final year could be integrated more smoothly into the overarching comparative narrative. To reach the next level, the overview needs to be slightly more sharply defined, capturing the broader trajectory of both data sets with greater precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout, meeting the criteria for a well-structured essay. Information is presented in a logical sequence, moving from an introduction to an overall trend and then breaking down the specific details for each category into separate paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'before witnessing' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data, although occasional mechanical transitions appear. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of visitors. To achieve a higher band, the transitions between sentences could feel more natural and fluid, reducing the reliance on standard formulaic connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the trends shown in the line graph through words like 'fluctuate', 'significant fall', 'steady', and 'decline'. The writer makes some attempts to use less common vocabulary items such as 'timeframe' and 'approximately', but there are occasional word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'visitors who visits' instead of 'visitors who visited' and 'numbers than increased' instead of 'then increased'. Spelling and word-form errors are present but do not impede communication. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of sophisticated lexical items with greater precision and avoid basic slips in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as introductory prepositional phrases and subordinate clauses introduced by 'before' and 'while'. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'the number of returning visitors are' instead of 'is', tense inconsistencies such as 'the figures for first time visitors is' in a past-tense context, and spelling-confused lexical choices treated as grammatical slips. While these errors rarely impede communication, they restrict the score. To attain a higher band, the writer must produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and maintain strict consistency in tense and agreement.
