Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting on both categories of visitors across the given time period, meeting the requirements of a solid performance. An overall trend is provided at the beginning, and key features such as peaks and troughs are highlighted, such as the drop in first-time visitors to 4000 in 2002 and the peak of returning visitors in 2006. However, some parts of the analysis lack full extension or clarity, which prevents the response from reaching a higher level. For instance, the description occasionally generalises trends rather than precisely tracing the trajectory, and some numerical data points are expressed loosely. To improve further, ensure that every major trend is fully supported by accurate data points and a clear, logical comparison between the two groups throughout the entire period.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically, starting with an introduction and overview before diving into the body details. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction from the body content, though the body paragraph could have been split into two for better readability. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', 'On the other hand', 'In contrast', and 'But', but some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional abrupt shifts between ideas—such as transitioning from first-time visitors to returning visitors without a strong linking bridge—mean that cohesion is occasionally faulty. Improving the flow between sentences and refining paragraph breaks would enhance the overall logical progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common items such as 'dramaticaly', 'plummeted', 'upsurge', and 'collapsed'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, alongside spelling errors like 'vistors' and 'dramaticaly'. While communication is not impeded and the meaning remains clear, the vocabulary control shows occasional lapses that prevent it from achieving greater precision and stylistic sophistication. To reach a higher standard, the writer should focus on mastering the correct spelling of common graph-describing terms and ensuring that less common lexical items are used accurately in context, such as using 'increase' or 'surge' with appropriate prepositional phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and compound-complex structures. However, there are several grammar and punctuation errors present throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies, missing prepositions, and awkward clause structures, such as 'returning vistors upsurge from 2000 to 2002' and 'in 2008 only 13,000 visitors came back'. These errors do not generally impede communication, as the reader can still grasp the intended meaning, but they occur frequently enough to keep the writing at this level. To improve grammatical range and accuracy, the student must pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, maintain consistent past tense when reporting historical data, and refine sentence boundaries to avoid run-on sentences.
